Three terms, one useful goal: help the right buyers find and understand your business.
SEO helps people find your pages
SEO stands for search engine optimization. It covers the work that helps a search engine find, understand, and show your pages. Clear site structure, useful content, relevant links, and a fast, usable website all play a part.
Start with the questions buyers ask before choosing your service. A page that answers them well is more useful than a page built around repeated keywords.
AEO makes answers easier to use
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. The term describes making answers clear enough for answer-focused search systems to understand and use.
Give a direct answer, then add the details that support it. Explain who the answer is for, where it applies, and what its limits are. A helpful answer still needs a useful next step for the reader.
GEO focuses on generative AI search
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It describes work intended to improve how a business or its content appears in AI-generated responses.
Use clear business facts, original expertise, and evidence a reader can check. Keep important pages accessible to crawlers. AI answers can change between searches, and no one can promise your business will be cited.
These are overlapping jobs
SEO, AEO, and GEO are not three separate tricks. Their names describe different views of related work: useful content, sound technical foundations, and a business people can understand and trust.
Google’s guide to generative AI search stresses crawlable, useful content and existing SEO principles. It does not require special AI schema. Bing’s AI Performance reporting offers a way to inspect citations in supported AI experiences.
Start with a baseline
Pick one service, one important page, and a small set of real buyer questions. Record the search visits and relevant enquiries you can measure. Note where an AI tool mentions or cites the business, including the date and question.
Improve the page, then review the same measures over time. Mentions and visits show attention. Qualified enquiries and client conversations tell you more about business value.
